June-ish Updates
PHONE BOOTH IS IN!!! It came in 400 pieces with 100+ pages of instructions, but it came together and looks AMAZING. If you need to quiet a fussy baby or take a quick work call while the kids play nearby, we got you!
Recess is getting a train! Ron, who is maybe the sweetest man we have ever met, came by the space for a tour and to walk us through the track and electronic trains he has generously offered to donate to Recess. Why is this SO cool? Who doesn’t love a space with a train?! We are right near the train tracks and now we will have our very own train circling the cafe. Be on the lookout for it going past our window tops once we open.
WE’RE HIRING for two positions: Shift Manager and Associate. The pay for the Shift Manager position is 15/hr plus tips, and the Associate’s is 13/hr plus tips. If you or someone you know is interested, be sure to reach out!

May Updates
First (and scariest), if you haven’t had a chance to check out our support video, take a look! HUGE thank you to Trevor Matthews for enduring our awkwardness!
We had our liquor license interview and are on track to have it in hand by open!
Last week Hyperion hosted us at their roastery for our first mini training. As we get closer to open, they will come on site with our entire staff to train in our space.
Toys and books are being delivered daily. We’ll have rotating items to keep our playspace fresh and lots of great books for the adults to check out while they unplug :)
The menu is in the works–as previously mentioned, we are focusing on local, high quality, high approachability items for all ages (bread boards, cheese and snacks for all!)
Our contractors came by last week to discuss our project timeline and chat through our play platform. Now begins the hunt for the perfect slide!
With that timeline, we now have a REAL schedule for construction–contractors start in mid-June and our goal is to have our Certificate of Occupancy (the piece of paper that lets us open) in hand about a month later. As we get further along in construction, look out for deets on soft launch parties and play reservations!

April Updates
As promised, we’re here with some updates on our progress:
BrushMonkeys helped us with our signage (photo above)!
Our soundproof phone booth is ordered for you to take a quick call or calm a fussy baby
All of our equipment, dishes, and 90% of our furniture are officially in the space, and it’s really starting to feel like home <3
Last week we attended the Shine and Rise summit at Tech Town in Detroit. It was incredible to be surrounded by so much community and to share our vision
Our Health Department Application Review was approved!
Our building permits have been re-submitted, fingers crossed for a speedy approval

March Updates
I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally be writing this newsletter—this has been years in the making! When I first dreamed up Recess Cafe, I was feeling deeply connected to my kids, a little isolated from the world, and hopeful that others might be craving the same kind of space I was. I longed for a place where I could exist seamlessly with my children, friends, partner, and career. My hope is that Recess Cafe becomes that space for you, too.
