April Updates

Our new signage!

Happy April, friends!

Before we get started, a quick reminder to follow us on Instagram!

As promised, we’re here with some updates on our progress:

  • BrushMonkeys helped us with our signage (photo above)!

  • Our soundproof phone booth is ordered for you to take a quick call or calm a fussy baby

  • All of our equipment, dishes, and 90% of our furniture are officially in the space, and it’s really starting to feel like home <3

  • Last week we attended the Shine and Rise summit at Tech Town in Detroit. It was incredible to be surrounded by so much community and to share our vision

  • Our Health Department Application Review was approved!

  • Our building permits have been re-submitted, fingers crossed for a speedy approval

  • We are putting the final edits on our crowdfunding campaign video! HUGE thank you to those who have already contributed to our success. We are humbled and overcome with gratitude that you are invested in our success:

For our final and most important update, Our Operations Manager has started!

Hello everyone! My name is Amelia Pointer, and I’m the Operations Manager at Recess! I am so incredibly excited to be a part of this amazing team, and I’m already having so much fun in my new role. You may have already seen me on our Instagram attempting to paint the Recess logo, or heard me blasting the Hairspray soundtrack inside the cafe while I paint the interior walls.

I’m currently a student at UMich, and I graduate in May (woof! terrifying!) For the past few years, however, I’ve worked in various daycares teaching kids of all ages–although I mostly worked with the young toddlers. This all has made me VERY familiar with the organized chaos that characterizes childcare settings. Those experiences really shaped how I think about community and connection. It’s what drew me to Recess Cafe: the idea of creating a space where families can slow down, spend time together or apart, and feel like they belong. I’m excited to bring that same energy—thoughtful, playful, and family-centered—into our new space!

Outside of Recess, I’m a big fan of horror movies and period pieces, collecting utilitarian earrings (for example, spoons, forks, etc), reading objectively bad books, and hanging out with my friends and family :)

I’m so incredibly pumped for us to open in the summer, and I can’t wait to meet you all!

We will be in touch with more updates shortly, thanks for staying in touch!

Thressa & Amelia
